WICHITA - Cuffed and wearing a red jail issued jumpsuit, Scott Roeder has been charged with one count first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with George Tiller's shooting death May 31 at his Wichita church.
Roeder, 51, appeared before Judge Ben Burgess from the Sedgwick County Jail via closed-circuit TV where he as also ordered to have no contact with the two men he is charged with pointing a gun at after Tiller's shooting on Sunday. Roeder has requested an attorney and has been assigned to the public defenders office. A preliminary hearing is tentatively set for June 16. Judge Warren Wilbert is assigned as the sentencing judge. A preliminary hearing is set for June 16. Roeder has two children Nick Roeder, 22, of Manhattan, Kan., and another child born in 2002. He divorced from Lindsey Roeder in 1996. Some say Roeder was a rogue activist with no formal connection or accountability covering to Pro Life groups. A person identifying himself as "Scott Roeder" posted messages on several Pro Life sites, including ChargeTiller.com. In 2007, the person posted on the site: "It seems as though what is happening in Kansas could be compared to the 'lawlessness' which is spoken of in the Bible. Tiller is the concentration camp 'Mengele' of our day and needs to be stopped before he and those who protect him bring judgement upon our nation."
That year, Roeder's name appeared on an Operation Rescue message board that said: "Bleass [sic] everyone for attending and praying in May to bring justice to Tiller and the closing of his death camp. Sometime soon, would it be feasible to organize as many people as possible to attend Tillers church (inside, not just outside) to have much more of a presence and possibly ask questions of the Pastor, Deacons, Elders and members while there? Doesn't seem like it would hurt anything but bring more attention to Tiller." Return to ChristianPress.com for updates on this story and for current Christian news.
