‘Moms of Boy Scouts’ Launches with Op-Ed in USA TODAY

Moms of Boy ScoutsA column by three women with the group Moms of Boy Scouts has been published by USA TODAY, urging the Boy Scouts of America to keep sex and politics out of the Boy Scouts, and urging the organization to stand by its timeless values. The column addresses a long battle to maintain the fundamental roots of the organization.

“Keep Sex and Politics out of the Boy Scouts! The Scouts are a private organization with the right to set their own rules about leadership. And parents have the right to raise issues about sex with their own children in their own time and in their own way.”

The commentary was co-authored by three mothers of Eagle Scouts. Karen Testerman of Franklin, New Hampshere, is mother of two Eagle Scouts and grandmother of five Boy Scouts. LuAnne Dietz is assistant scoutmaster of Dan Beard Council in Waynesville, Ohio, and is a member of the Order of the Arrow, mother of an Eagle Scout and a Life Scout. Ellen Samek of Valley View, Texas, is mother of an Eagle Scout, wife of an Eagle Scout and a former Scoutmaster.

In their op-ed the three wrote:

“Since its foundation, the standards and values of the Boy Scouts have been clearly stated. Their oath and creed are part of America. Those who apply for and assume positions of leadership are well aware of those standards and values. Those who disagree are free to form organizations that reflect their own belief systems, and to set whatever standards they wish.

“For us, it is a fundamental principle that parents must have the exclusive right to raise issues about sex and sexuality with their own children and in their own way, in the privacy of their own homes and not around a campfire.

“Changing the long-standing policy at the Scouts would inject a highly-charged political issue into the heart of this traditional, faith-focused organization, an organization that is not interested in politics at all but in people -- in the boys it was founded to form and serve.”

Moms of Boy Scouts was founded in March, 2013. The group’s mission statement reads, “Keep Sex and Politics out of the Boy Scouts! The Scouts are a private organization with the right to set their own rules about leadership. And parents have the right to raise issues about sex with their own children in their own time and in their own way.”
